After three years of
touring in support of her debut album, Mieka Pauley
is
ready to get back into the recording studio. When Pauley makes
a return visit to The Point in Bryn Mawr tonight, she will
introduce many of her new songs to the audience.
"I’ll
be going into the studio on Nov. 1 to record demos for a bunch
of my new songs," Pauley said during a phone interview Monday
night from her home in the Boston area. "Right now, I probably
have about 15 songs in
addition to the CD that I’m
comfortable with on stage."
Pauley plays guitar and
writes her own songs. Her music is lifted out of the ordinary
by a combination of insightful lyrics and her deep, warm and
resonating voice.
"I don’t want to be considered a
folk artist," said Pauley, who graduated from Harvard
University (at 21 with advanced placement) with a degree in
biological anthropology.
"When it comes to writing
lyrics, no one has been a particular influence. When I was in
high school, I never even thought about songs being written --
they were just songs that I listened to.
"When I
started writing songs myself, I just wanted words that went
along with my voice. I’m having a lot of fun with my new
material. My songwriting has come a long way. I’m expanding.
I’m trying to get a little outside myself. It’s been a
conscious effort for me.
"I’ve also been expanding
with my performance schedule. I’ve been playing shows down
south and as far west as Colorado -- at all kinds of venues,
including bars, coffee houses, rock clubs and theaters. I did
a brief stint with a band in July for a few festivals but,
right now, it’s a lot easier to do it solo."
