The PSP has long been a part of the Philly music scene, providing a comfortable space for audiences to enjoy an intimate moment with songwriters and performers, as you can do during tonight's performance:

My Morning Download 5/17/07 - Porter Wagoner

Each weekday, My Morning Download introduces you to some of the coolest new music on the web. We clear through the noise so you don't have to. Today MMD gives you a new song from the country legend Porter Wagoner.

A resolute tradition bearer and Grand Ole Opry star since 1957, Wagoner's extraordinary far-reaching song catalog has consistently pushed country music into new directions. His new album Wagonmaster, produced by Marty Stuart, was recorded in three days and verifies the 79-year old Wagoner's impressive abilities and confirms him as a commanding, relevant force in American music. The album is due on June 6th on Anti- Records

"Committed to Parkview" is a song written by Johnny Cash and given to Marty Stuart (then a Cash Band member) in 1983 to give to Wagoner. Stuart forgot to deliver the song and didn't do so until the summer of 2006. The song not only picks up where Wagoner's cult favorite "Rubber Room" leaves off, it extends the theme with devastating effect. Yet Wagoner almost never got the tune: “In 1981, I was on tour with Cash in Europe,” Stuart explained, “and I had a Porter tape and played it for Cash, and he and I got into a Porter listening marathon. And Cash said, ‘I got a song for Porter, called ‘Committed to Parkview,’--because they had both been guests there--and he gave me an envelope with a cassette in it to take to him. Well, we got home and I forgot all about it, but when we were choosing material for this album, I remembered and finally found it.”

Blues File May, 17, 2007: Big Joe Duskin

The XPN Blues File for Thursday, May 17th, at 8:30AM on XPN's Morning Show with Michaela Majoun is a remembrance of Boogie Woogie pianist Big Joe Duskin, who died at the age of 86 on May 6th. Duskin's father, Perry Duskin, a Baptist preacher deplored blues music. The Duskins lived in Cincinnati, where Joe learned boogie woogie on the sly. In deference to his 80-year-old father, Duskin pledged not to play blues publicly while the old man still lived. Perry Duskin lived to the age of 105, keeping his career on hold for a quarter century. Duskin enjoyed success on both sides of the Atlantic once he finally got out there, but the relationship he had with his father was quite frightening.

My Morning Download 5/8/07 - The Clientele

Each weekday, My Morning Download introduces you to some of the coolest new music on the web. We clear through the noise so you don't have to. Meet The Clientele

Here's how The Clientele's lead singer and songwriter Alasdair MacLean sums up their new Merge Records release God Save The Clientele:

"The band are setting free their inner Monkees; a lovely blend of Big Star twisted power-pop and country achin', with flashes of the Beatles at their most joyful and upbeat. The ghosts, half-light and uncertainties remain, but I sense a new found optimism in the music. Definitely new era for the Clientele. Oh yeah you better mention Mel Draisey joining band as multi-instrumentalist on piano, violin and vocals; and something about us painting from a broader pallette as a result. She'll kill me if she's not in the press kit. You should maybe point out that we have guest spots from Pat Sansone from the Autumn Defence / Wilco, Tony Crow from Lambchop, and Lupe Nunez-Fernandez from Pipas. Louis Phillipe provided string arrangements."

Inner Monkees. Big Star. And add a little Mama's & The Papa's to the mix while you're at it.
